Escape from Overshoot

Economics for a Planet in Peril (2023)

In Escape from Overshoot, the author takes the reader on a grand tour of the overshoot crisis in which human economies are exceeding the capacity of the biosphere to sustain them. From the history of economic thought and the failure to recognise implications of the energy, material, and land use requirements of endless growth, the author explains how we got here and why collapse is inevitable unless we change course. But as the clock ticks, what pathways are possible and plausible? The author surveys the alternatives and their limitations: from green growth and doughnut economics to well-being, steady state, regenerative economics, and ecosocialism. He then describes what the latest and most sophisticated economic modelling tells us about whether and how we can intentionally shrink the physical size of our economy and avoid collapse, while enhancing human thriving and justice for all.

The book is highly illustrated and written for a wide audience.
