Pollution: Economy and Environment

(1972, 2017)

This book, which is based on the author's PhD dissertation, is a breakthrough in the field of the economics of the environment. It was the first major study of the interactions between an entire national economy and the environment that supports it. As such, it is a foundational contribution to the development of environmentally-extended input-output analysis. The approach developed in the book in detail, has been adopted and adapted by researchers around the world and by statistical agencies such as Statistics Canada and private sector companies such as TruCost in the UK. The book, which was reprinted in 2017, remains an important contribution to the literature because it systematically incorporates the principle of materials balance. This ensures that the economic models described in the book are consistent with the physical law of the conservation of mass. The use made of commodity by industry input-output analysis also remains a notable feature.
